  16. <p>An expedition finds several new creatures, including a kind
  17. of goat

  19. <p>     It is hard to imagine that much of scientific interest would
  20. be left in the once pristine jungles of Vietnam, site of almost
  21. uninterrupted warfare from the 1940s through the mid-'70s. The
  22. conflict with the U.S., with its carpet-bombing and wholesale
  23. spraying of Agent Orange, was especially devastating. Thus it
  24. was something of a surprise that the first scientific foray deep
  25. into the Vu Quang Nature Reserve, near Laos, found what amounts
  26. to a "lost world" of animal and plant species.
  27. </p>
  28. <p>     The most exciting discovery: a large, horned mammal that
  29. may be a kind of goat. Scientists brought out bones and skin
  30. samples to help them find out where it fits in the evolutionary
  31. puzzle. The expedition, sponsored by the World Wildlife Fund,
  32. also brought back sightings or specimens of two new species of
  33. bird, one new kind of fish, and a previously unknown,
  34. yellow-shelled tortoise--and there are probably more new
  35. creatures to be found. A follow-up expedition is already in the
  36. works.
